We wanted to share a powerful real world example of how the NeurOptics NPi-300 Pupillometer is supporting frontline teams to make faster, more informed clinical decisions in high pressure environments.
A routine afternoon on the Essex coastline quickly escalated into a life-threatening emergency when an individual was found unconscious with significant trauma following an outdoor accident.
Bystanders provided initial assistance, but it was the arrival of the Essex & Herts Air Ambulance critical care team that enabled advanced, specialist intervention at the scene.
The patient required stabilisation on site before transfer to a Major Trauma Centre with multiple serious injuries affecting the head, chest, spine and pelvis.
Early neurological assessment is critical and for patients in the future, like the one above , the NeurOptics Pupillometer is a key element of this early decision making, providing an objective, numerical measurement of pupil size and reactivity at the point of care. This allows clinicians to detect subtle neurological changes, reduce subjectivity, and make faster, more confident decisions when seconds matter most.
These insights support continuity of care from the site of the incident through to hospital handover, helping clinical teams respond to potential deterioration as early as possible.
Frontline perspective from EHAAT
As highlighted by Laurie Phillipson, Clinical Academic Fellow with Essex & Herts Air Ambulance, pre-hospital teams often operate in highly complex and time-critical conditions where rapid, reliable data is essential.
Having access to objective pupillometry at the scene gives clinicians an additional layer of confidence in their decision making, particularly when managing patients with suspected traumatic brain injury.
It also supports clearer communication with receiving hospital teams, ensuring that key neurological trends are understood before arrival.
The NeurOptics Pupillometer is now being used from the moment of first assessment all the way through to hospital handover – giving clinicians real-time insights into subtle neurological changes that directly shape treatment plans.
